Image Locator

The image searcher, David Vicente has developed in the ICT Faculty at the Donostia campus of the Basque University, carries out image searches. This search engine is based on the colours and the composition of the image. This new IT tool is called Look4Picture.

To locate images on the Internet, search engines like Yahoo or Google carry out their search based on text. The name or description that is sought is set in written form so that the search engine may carry out its function. The image searcher that David Vicente has developed, carries out the same searches, but in quite a different way: this search engine is based on the colours and the composition of the image. The new IT tool is called Look4Picture. The search procedure is quite simple an image is selected and the search facility looks for similar images. To develop the system, a small bank of images consisting of 10,000 photographs. Currently, work is being undertaken to perfect the system even further so it is capable of carrying out searches on the Internet itself. But, taking into account the current size of the Internet, just one computer is not sufficient, and thus work is being carried out on the design of a net of computers to manage the system. When it is finished, we will have a product on the Net which will carry out searches by redefinition and precision-fixing.
