The European Commission, DG XII, has published a book of proceedings of a conference on "Innovative research and appropriate health care for the citizens of Europe", held in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, in April 1997. The conference followed others organized in 1994 and 1995, all of which aimed to establish which issues Europe should address and how public health research in a European perspective can meet the needs of the European population. The conference took place in parallel to the development of the Commission's proposals for the Fifth RTD Framework Programme. The major topics discussed during the conference are all covered in the Commission's proposal. The book includes the speeches given at the formal opening of the conference, including those by Commissioner Edith Cresson and Wim Kok, Prime Minister of The Netherlands. Papers given at each session are included. The topics covered are: - Health economics; - Ageing: Synonymous with disease and disability; - Concepts of prevention: Myth or reality? - Will knowledge of our genome improve the quality of our lives?
