Mapping the forests of Europe - Demonstration of a new approach
The Space Applications Institute, part of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), has published a report outlining a new methodology for mapping the forests of Europe using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The report describes and demonstrates a methodology for mapping the forested areas of Europe at an approximate scale of 1:2 million using low spatial resolution satellite data. Developed within the framework of the FIRS (Forest Information for Remote Sensing) project, the methodology is intended to be operational and to provide a mechanism for unified European forest area mapping that may be repeated on an annual to decadal basis.
