The European Commission, DG XII, has published a progress report on the Biotechnology programme for 1997. The report features the 60 projects funded with a total EC contribution of ECU 73 million, following the first call for proposals under the programme launched in January 1995 (OJ No C 12 of 17.1.1995 p. 18). The report provides short abstracts based on the first annual reports submitted by the projects' coordinators. These include a number of demonstration projects, whose aim is to evaluate the performance of new technology under realistic operating conditions. The report also covers a number of preparatory awards, which provide SMEs with an opportunity to establish the feasibility of a project, prior to embarking on the preparation of a full RTD project proposal. The areas covered in this report include: - Cell factories; - Genome analysis; - Animal and plant technology; - Immunology and transdisease vaccinology; - Infrastructures; - Preparatory awards; - Horizontal activities.
