The Electronic Publishing and Libraries Unit of the European Commission, DG XIII E/4, has published the proceedings of a metadata workshop, held in Luxembourg in December 1997. This was the first of a series of metadata workshops planned by the Commission, with participants drawn from Libraries sector projects under the Telematics Applications programme, as well as from other sectors of the programme. The objective of the series is to establish a platform for coordination between projects concerned with metadata in the broad sense. The workshops also aim to make a wider European community aware of the developments in the standards arena and to stimulate feedback from the projects for standards development. The December Workshop included a tutorial on metadata and on "Dublin Core", led by the UK Office for Library and Information Networking (UKOLN), presentations of current projects in Scandinavia and the UK, and three breakout sessions on metadata creation, harvesting and retrieval.
