The first international conference on language resources and evaluation, initiated by the European Language Resources Association (ELRA), will be held from 28 to 30 May 1998 in Granada, Spain. The conference will be supported by DG XIII of the European Commission and the Fundación Banco Central-Hispano.

The aims of the conference include:

- To provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in language technologies;
- To discuss problems and opportunities;
- To exchange information regarding ongoing and planned activities;
- To discuss language resources and their applications;
- To evaluate methodologies;
- To demonstrate evaluation tools;
- To explore possibilities and promote initiatives for international cooperation.

The conference will focus on the availability of language resources and the methods for evaluation of these resources. In addition, it will address technologies and products for written and spoken language.

In parallel with the conference, an industrial exhibition will be organized by ELRA. This exhibition is open to companies who wish to promote and demonstrate their products and prototypes to the wide range of experts and representatives from all over the world participating in the conference.
