The fourth EC-Geographical Information Systems workshop will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from 24 to 26 June 1998. The workshop is being organized by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and the Hungarian Association for Geo-Information (HUNAGI). The location has been chosen in order to help facilitate contacts and links with participants from Central and Eastern Europe.

This workshop continues a series which aims to present GIS projects sponsored by the European Commission, in particular DG III. The workshop should help to establish and maintain contacts, and to enable consultation and exchange of ideas between developers and other participants. It should also serve as a discussion forum for emerging issues related to the formation of a pan-European Geographical Information Infrastructure.

The workshop will focus on the following themes:

- Progress in interoperability;
- Convergence of technologies;
- New applications and markets;
- Technology transfer.
