A conference entitled "Building the city of tomorrow: The energy dimension" will be held during EXPO'98, in Lisbon, Portugal, on 29 and 30 May 1998. The conference is organized by the European Commission, DG XVII, and will involve the participation of the Commissioner responsible for energy, Mr. Christos Papoutsis.

The conference aims to create a high-level platform to discuss and define future actions and policies with respect to the EU's planned Fifth RTD Framework Programme. For the first time these discussions will contain an important urban dimension, whilst the energy/environment role in the context of sustainability will also be discussed.

The conference will include speeches and lectures on the energy aspects of the "City of Tomorrow", delivered by leading experts. Participants will comprise representatives of the European Commission, national governments, industry, professional associations, and municipalities currently involved with energy technologies.
