The first in a series of workshops aimed at outlining the potential benefits of earth observation data for a wide range of users will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 2 and 3 July 1998. Organized by the Centre for Earth Observation programme, managed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, the series is entitled "Earth Observation for Customers".

The Lisbon workshop, taking place during EXPO'98 which has as its principle theme "Oceans - our heritage", will focus on oceans and coasts. It is intended to present the results of a number of EU-funded earth observation projects which could be of value to users working in the field of oceans or coasts. Emphasis will be placed by the project developers on their ability to meet individual customer requirements. In addition, it is hoped that customers themselves will be able to present their points of view on how earth observation could be used in their fields.

Presentations will cover the following topics:

- Seastate;
- Oceans and climate;
- Ice monitoring;
- Algal bloom;
- Oil pollution;
- Coastal zones.
