The European Association for the study of Science and Technology (EASST) will hold a general conference in Lisbon, Portugal, from 1 to 3 October 1998. The conference will be entitled "Culture of Science and Technology - Europe and the global context", and is sponsored by the European Commission, DG XII, and the Fundação Portuguesa para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for the presentation of and debate on recent work in the field. In particular, cross-disciplinary approaches and cross-fertilization between humanistic and policy-oriented studies will be featured. It will comprise a series of lectures, to be presented by researchers and academics from all over Europe, covering the following fields:

- Science and technology policies: national, European and global;
- The science and technology system: institutions and networks;
- Research and evaluation methodologies;
- Public understanding, expert and public participation in decision-making;
- Science, law and ethics;
- Technology studies;
- Realities and meanings in the "virtual society";
- Space, environment and mobility;
- History and theory of science and technology;
- Transgressing boundaries.
