The UK Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, and the European Commission, are jointly hosting a conference from 28 to 30 June 1998, in Bath, UK, entitled "Natura 2000 and People: A Partnership".

The conference aims to address issues affecting the implementation of the European Habitats Directive, which was adopted by Member States in 1992 to promote the maintenance of biodiversity. The Directive provides for the creation of a network of protected areas across the European Union to be known as Natura 2000.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together European and national policy-makers, and local actors involved in the Natura 2000 process, to consider the issues involved in the management of socio-economic activities on Natura 2000 sites, such as agriculture, forestry, hunting and tourism. This is in order to share successes, to address problems, and to consider the mechanisms for delivering solutions.

The conference will be opened by Mr. Michael Meacher, UK Environment Minister, and by Mrs. Ritt Bjerregaard, European Environment Commissioner. The conference programme will include workshop sessions with presentations and discussions, and visits to some of the proposed Natura 2000 sites in the South-West of England which will illustrate the issues under discussion.
