The first international conference on mathematical ecology will be held in Madrid, Spain, from 4 to 8 September 1998. The aim of the conference is to discuss and present the use of mathematical tools in the domains of classical ecology, paying particular attention to the management of natural resources and mathematical methods of ecology.

The conference will be composed of plenary lectures, oral presentations and poster sessions. The topics to be covered during the plenary session will include:

- Behavioural ecology;
- Ecology of pests and pathogens;
- Metapopulations;
- Spatial aspects of ecology;
- Stochastic models in ecology.

The topics to be covered during the special sessions will include the following:

- Aggregration methods and perturbations in population dynamics;
- Bioenergic modelling of ecosystems;
- Forest models between theory, data and application;
- Perspectives in modelling vegetation dynamics;
- Spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal structures in oceanic plankton populations.
