A course on science and technology in enterprise will be held in San Sebastian, Spain, from 9 to 11 July 1998. The course, organized by the Universidad del Pais Vasco and the Fundacion Escuela de Ingenieros de Bilbao, will include presentations from representatives from the EU's INNOVATION and Industrial and Materials Technologies programmes.

The key theme of the course will be the benefits of innovation in a company, in terms of competitiveness, employment and wealth creation. Such innovation is supported mainly by scientific and technological developments, and constitutes a complex system which needs to be understood if management is to achieve maximum efficiency, and if results are to be optimized.

The objective of this course is, therefore, to analyse the key factors which:

- Set out scientific, technological and industrial policies more adequately, and with a more global vision;
- Generate an integrated vision of the mission of the science-technology-enterprise system, and a shared vision for the different agents of innovation;
- Detect ideas that facilitate maximum efficiency of the innovation system, in so far as it supports the competitiveness of enterprise.

The topics to be covered during the course include:

- The mission of technology centres in the innovation chain;
- Criteria for establishing research and training programmes in universities;
- Innovation in enterprises;
- The politics of science, technology and industrial development;
- European science and technology policies in support of the competitiveness of European industry;
- Technological factors in competition.
