The Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) for North-west Italy will hold a workshop on laser techniques in Turin, Italy, on 7 July 1998. The aim of the workshop is to analyse the potential application of laser technologies in the production phase.

The workshop will explore the opportunities offered by laser technology in the development of new applications (in particular welding and heat treatment). The advantages offered by laser technology in the technical and economic optimization of the product and the process will be discussed, particularly in terms of quality and performance. This will focus on the following in particular:

- Optimization of the material and the reduction of weight;
- Reduction of volume and standardization of sub-groups;
- Reduction and/or simplification of mechanical processing.

The results of projects, financed within the EU's research programme for Industrial and Materials Technologies (BRITE/EURAM), will be incorporated in some of the technologies presented during the workshop, which include:

- Welding of advanced materials with high power CW and pulser-sustainer YAG laser;
- Laser welding of aluminium for the automotive industry;
- Dual wavelength laser processing;
- Heavy section laser welding;
- Laser surface treatment of mechanical components for improved mechanical and physical properties;
- Laser-assisted machining.
