An international workshop entitled "Water-related conflicts of interest in the Alpine environment" will be held in Villach, Austria, from 28 September to 1 October 1998. The workshop will receive support from the European Commission, DG XII, and is organized by the Joanneum Research Centre, Austria.

The aim of the workshop is the transfer of knowledge and expertise in practical water resource applications, focusing, in particular, on integrated water resources management and measures for conflicting situations. It will be opened by a representative of the European Commission, DG XII, who will also deliver a presentation on the hydrological aspects of the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme. Other topics to be presented during the workshop, include:

- The importance of water in changing times;
- Environmental research in Europe;
- Austrian strategies in water policy;
- New challenges for research;
- Groundwater emplacement in European coastal aquifers: implications for development.
