A European conference entitled "Crops for a green industry" will be held in Gmunden, Austria, from 6 to 8 October 1998. The conference, an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, will be supported by several Austrian Government Ministries and the European Commission, DG VI, and will be held during the course of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The aim of the conference is to discuss possibilities for better and more stable conditions for the production and application of renewable raw materials in the context of sustainable economic development. The topics covered during the conference will be presented by a range of representatives from industry and government, including the European Commission.

Issues such as the potential for renewable raw materials for the development of rural areas, industry and trade, employment and ecology, and the necessity for sustainable economic development will provide the focus for the conference. The application of the most modern technology in this context will also be discussed.
