The ninth international symposium on handling environmental and biological samples in chromatography will be held in Porto, Portugal, from 10 to 13 October 1999. The organisers are currently inviting submissions for oral and poster sessions during the conference and in hearing from potential exhibitors. The aim of the symposium is to present the latest developments in handling and preparation techniques and to present the results of projects making up the Waste Water Cluster funded under the EU's Environment and Climate research programme. The projects to be presented are as follows:

- PRISTINE - an integrated study on priority surfactants and their toxic metabolites in waste effluent discharges;
- INEXSPORT - for the integrated immuno extraction sampling and portable biosensor prototype for in-field monitoring;
- OWWA - for the on-line field sampling and monitoring in combination with automated determination of micropollutants in industrial and communal waste water;
- PRENDISENSOR - for the development of a sensor for waste water analysis.

The symposium will cover new developments and review handling and preparation techniques such as solid phase extraction, including specific methods utilising enzyme-immuno interactions and tailor made reagents and membrane techniques. Hyphenated techniques and MS techniques and automation will also be considered.

Specific sessions will be devoted to the following topics:

- Molecular imprinted polymers for SPE;
- Handling of organic pollutants in effluents;
- Handling of biological techniques.
