EUROCHIP, the service organisation of the ESPRIT programme's VLSI Design Training Action announces a course of lectures in High Level Digital System Design to be held in Bonn on 26-30 October. This will be followed by a week of training exercises held in Leuven, 30 November-4 December 1992.

The course gives an advanced introduction to modern higher level design methods, techniques and tools. It concentrates on the RT, the architecture and the system levels. Participants should be familiar with digital system design and design automation. The course is intended for teachers; however, researchers, tool builders and others may find it equally useful.

The duration of the course is two weeks, divided into two parts of five days each. The first (GMD, Sankt Augustin) consists of a series of lectures addressing the foundations, principles and the context of digital system design, including both control- and data-dominated systems. In particular, the areas of computers, digital signal processing and telecommunications are considered. The lectures give an overview of digital system architectures and discuss design issues in detail. In addition, novel implementation alternatives (i.e. FPGAs as an alternative to ASICs) and high-speed integrated circuits are presented.

The second section of the course (IMEC, Leuven) is taken up mainly with laboratory sessions to practice the use of high-level tools available through EUROCHIP. Each design tool is discussed in context and is used in a small design exercise. Tools covered include CALLAS/CADDY, CATHEDRAL, COSSAP, a VHDL simulation tool, SYNOPSIS, ASYL and OCEAN.
