An international workshop on tissue engineering will be held in Hanover, Germany, from 15 to 17 October 1998. The event will be organised by one of the partners in the Lower Saxony/Saxony-Anhalt Innovation Relay Centre, Intospace GmbH. The event, entitled "Principles and perspectives of tissue engineering for basic and applied research", will cover areas of the anatomy including the heart, liver, skin, bone and cartilage.

Topics to be covered in detail during the conference will include:

- Introduction to tissue engineering;
- Cardiac muscle cell differentiation in primary cell culture;
- Cardiac differentiation from genetically engineered embryonic stem cells;
- Evaluation of functional performance in bio-artificial liver devices;
- Review of skin models and applications;
- In vitro engineering of bone and cartilage transplants;
- Role of gravity and mechanical forces for differentiation;
- Funding opportunities for research in tissue engineering.
