The tenth EU Young Scientists Contest, which will be held in Porto, Portugal, will begin in two weeks time from 20 to 27 September 1998. This annual contest is organised within the framework of the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR) and will showcase the best in European student scientific achievement. It will bring together the winners of national competitions in 30 countries, as well as the winners of the US INTEL Science and Engineering Fair, who will attend as special guest scientists, and guest observers from Japan, the Republic of Korea and Latin America.

During the contest, a scientific exhibition comprising 57 high quality scientific projects, will be open to the public. Following the exhibition of all the projects, three first prizes of ECU 5,000, three second prizes of ECU 3,000 and six third prizes of ECU 1,5000 will be awarded. In addition, honorary awards may be granted to enable one prize winner to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, one individual to attend the Science Festival in London, and up to three teams to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair in the US.

The importance of the event has been summarised by the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation, Education, Training and Youth, Mrs Edith Cresson, who stated "The youth of today will be the driving force to take our continent to the next millennium. The contest is an excellent means to highlight the talent of these young innovators and to forge links amongst them and between them and the international scientific community".
