An advanced workshop on food biotechnology and communication, funded within the framework of the EU's Biotechnology research programme, will be held in Munich, Germany, from 6 to 11 December 1998. Upto 20 places are available for biotechnologists and related experts in the field of food and agriculture who wish to improve their understanding of the social issues surrounding biotechnology and public communication techniques. Applicants are invited from the EU Member States plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Israel and all applicants must have a good understanding of English.

Modern biotechnology is developing rapidly and holds out the prospect for significant advances in agriculture, food and medicine and the creation of hi-tech jobs. However this new technology also raises concern with the public, partly due to its novelty and perceived risks and also because of its environmental, ethical, philosophical and developmental nature.

It is believed that improved communication is necessary between those interested in promoting biotechnological applications and those with concerns about the technology. The workshop therefore aims to provide training in the latest developments in the understanding of the public perception of biotechnology as it applies to food and agriculture. In addition training will be provided in the types of risk communication strategies which may be employed as a means of improving understanding and reducing conflict in this field.

The key sessions of the workshop will cover the following:

- Overview of risk assessment, management and communication;
- The public perception of biotechnology;
- Review of risk communication theory;
- Review of risk communication strategies and tools;
- Planning for communication.
