Creating better health systems in Europe
During this forum the main short and long-term aspects of the working programme of the European Community, the Member States and regions for the further development of a European health policy will be discussed, as well as related aspects such as the interdependence between health, economy and ethics.
The parallel sessions of the conference will address the following:
- Research and development - what is the role of society to create a supportive environment for R&D?
- Public health and the single market;
- Challenges and opportunities for a enlarged European health sector - the role of the regions;
- Meeting the challenge of a changing economic environment - how to finance European health systems in the next millennium;
- The role of the EU: legal and institutional framework of the Union's policy on health;
- Health status in Central and Eastern Europe and particular health risks.
The event will conclude with a speech by the European Commissioner for social affairs, Mr Padraig Flynn, who will address the issue of the EU and its future role in health policy. Other concluding presentations will examine the role of patient and consumer groups and the future of the health care industry.
