An open day on the GIPSIE project which helps support the European geographic information systems (GIS) industry to develop products compliant with OpenGIS specifications will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 5 October 1998. Participants are also invited to attend the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) technical committee meeting which will run from 5 to 8 October 1998. The GIPSIE project is funded under the EU's specific RTD programme in the field of Information Technologies (ESPRIT).

The project focuses on three main areas of activity:

- Establishing an OpenGIS interest group to unite European industry and establish good communication with the OGC;
- Identifying and resolving European issues and to introduce them to the worldwide OpenGIS specification process;
- Informing the European information technology industry about the OpenGIS movement.

The information day will discuss GIS interoperability with the OGC process. The topics to be covered in detail during the conference will include:

- Geographic information interoperability and its relevance for GIPSIE and the OGC;
- Perspectives on interoperability from the EU and the OGC;
- Standardisation in Geographic information interoperability;
- Interoperability demonstrations;
- The business approach of the OGC;
- The technical approach of the OGC;
- Conformance and testing in the OGC.
