The 1998 European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry will be held in Pau, France, from 10 to 14 January 1999. The aim is to present recent advances in spectrochemical analysis and to address fundamental aspects of plasma sources and their applications in the industrial, clinical, environmental, nuclear and food analysis sectors.

The conference will bring together different scientific communities from all over the world to discuss the use of plasma sources for speciation analysis, laser ablation, environmental science, as well as new instrument developments. Recent developments made within the framework of the EU's research programme in the field of Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) will also be presented during the conference and new projects will be launched.

The conference programme will cover the following:

- Sample preparation and introduction;
- Laser ablation;
- Alternative plasma sources;
- Environment and geosciences;
- The future of instrumentation;
- High resolution ICP-MS;
- The EU research programme for Standards, Measurements and Testing.

In addition to the plenary sessions of the conference, short courses will be organised on various topics related to plasma spectrochemistry and an instrument exhibition will also be held.
