An international forum entitled "Frontiers of science and measurement" will be held in Teddington, United Kingdom, from 21 to 25 June 1999. The aim of the forum is to bring together industrialists, representatives from the physical, chemical, biological and engineering sciences, and metrologists responsible for developing the international infrastructure for measurement standards.

The forum will provide the opportunity to review and debate cross-sectoral areas of scientific research that will provide opportunities for industry in the future, and will therefore have an impact on measurement and the standards needed for the future. The key issues that will influence the demands that industry will place on standards will also be highlighted.

The event will comprise a series of plenary sessions and focused discussions on the following topics:

- The technologies and markets of the future and the problems to be tackled;
- Introductions to the areas in science where major breakthroughs may happen and the issue of new science and its influence on business and society;
- The extension of today's capabilities in order to meet the needs of the future;
- Links and commonalities between industrial needs and leading edge science and standards.
