A conference on glacial-interglacial sea level changes will be held in Albufeira, Portugal, from 13 to 18 February 1999. The event will be organised by the European Science Foundation, as part of a series of European Research Conferences (EURESCO), and will be supported by the Euroconferences activity of the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR).

This conference will address glacial-interglacial sea level changes in four dimensions: quaternary, sea levels, climate change and crustal dynamics. It will focus on recent developments in our understanding of Quaternary sea level changes and the relationship to past changes in climate. The influence of crustal dynamics on patterns and processes of coastal change will be considered alongside the contribution of recent earth rheological models to our understanding of former sea level and ocean volume changes. Discussions will also address the links between former ocean circulation, climate change and sea level.

Topics to be addressed during the conference will be considered under the following session headings:

- Quaternary sea levels, global change and ocean volume fluxes;
- Palaeoceanography, climate change and sea level;
- Coral records of Quaternary sea level change;
- IPCC scenarios of sea level change: Past, present and future;
- Quaternary sea levels and earth rheological models;
- Quaternary sea level changes in tectonically active regions;
- Quaternary sea levels, isostasy and crustal deformation;
- Methodological problems in reconstructing quaternary sea levels.

In addition, three workshops will also be held during the afternoon sessions of the conference. These will address:

- Dating and measurement of rates of sea level change;
- Reconciling concepts of sea level rise and ocean volume change;
- Reconciling rheological models of sea level change.
