South Africa keen to promote FP7 Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities Research partnerships
The event will be held on Friday 4 April 2008 over lunchtime, starting at 12:30 and concluding at 14:00, at the South African Mission to the European Union and Embassy in Brussels (Rue Montoyer 17-19, Metro: Trone.) Refreshments will be served to permit networking, following the presentation and discussion session.
The socio-economic sciences and humanities occupy a central position as part of South Africa’ strategic national research programmes. For example, South Africa’s “Ten Year Innovation Plan”, includes as one of its five grand R&D challenges “Human and Social Dynamics”, i.e. developing a better understanding of human and social behaviour. The outcomes of this R&D effort is for example targeted at applying science and technology for sustainable livelihoods, ensuring affordable access to services or developing socio-culturally based models that reflect the learning behaviour of the South African National System of Innovation. The intended goal is to confirm South Africa’s status as knowledge hub for social sciences research in Africa.
South Africa is keen to expand its portfolio of FP6 and FP7 participation in the SSH domain. South Africa researchers’ rich expertise, in many instances related to their unique experience acquired in the dynamic and evolving South African socio-economic environment position South Africa well to contribute to FP7 SSH focus areas such as social cohesion; social, cultural and education challenges; sustainability; demographic change; migration; growth and employment; and indeed global interdependence. Certainly the FP7 SSH agenda addresses many globally shared challenges for which international cooperation is essential.
