Clean coal technologies and Carbon capture and storage in South Africa

South Africa is looking to foster R&D partnerships with Europe in the field of clean coal technologies and carbon capture and storage in order to step up its participation in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) energy activities.

25 April 2008 - 25 April 2008
South Africa
The search for energy security has been identified as one of the “grand challenges” of South Africa’s Ten-Year Innovation Plan. Energy research and innovation is therefore also a priority area for South Africa’s scientific and technological cooperation with the European Union and the country is indeed determined to step up its participation in the energy activities of the FP7.

As part of this effort a special event is organised with the support of the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP) to sensitise potential European partners to opportunities for energy R&D cooperation with South Africa, specifically in the fields of clean coal technology and carbon capture and storage. The event, a lunchtime seminar, will take place on Friday 25 April 2008 at 12:30. (Venue: South African Mission to the European Union, Rue Montoyer 17-19, 1000 Brussels. Metro: Trone.)

The seminar will consist of a presentation by Dr Tony Surridge, the Senior Manager: Advanced Fossil Fuel Use of South Africa’s National Energy Research Institute (SANERI – http://www.saneri.org.za(opens in new window)). The SANERI is the hosting institution for South Africa’s FP7 National Contact Point for Energy. Dr Surridge’s presentation will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and refreshments will be served to permit informal networking. Proceedings will conclude no later than 14:00.
