On May 28th in Istanbul, the European Forum on Philanthropy and Research Funding will hold a workshop on ethics and funding research.
Peteris Zilgalvis, Head of the Unit Governance and Ethics at the European Commission Directorate General for Research, will attend as keynote speaker.
Taking place immediately before the launch of the European Foundation Centre’s (EFC) 19th Annual Conference on 29th -31st May, in Istanbul, this workshop will seek to provide answers to the following questions:
• How does one take ethics into account when supporting research projects?
• How do funders adopt ethical processes and procedures in their operations?
• What difficulties do funders face in ensuring the projects they support adhere to ethical guidelines?

The EFC 19th Annual Conference, which starts on the next day and continues until 31st May, will feature the following sessions looking at how philanthropic funders support research:
• Exploring models of cooperation for research foundations in Europe
Review and discussion on the different models of cooperation between research foundations, industry and public organisations in supporting science, research and development. The session will address several issues linked to the question: how can research foundations cooperate with business and public administrations to achieve their objectives?

• Towards a culture of creativity. Changing roles of European universities and foundations
Since the late 1990s we have seen vast changes in Europe’s higher education and research landscape. This has forced us to re-think traditional institutional approaches, particularly creating a stimulating and inspiring environment for research breakthroughs. Each institution must meet the challenge of increasing global competition by establishing its own culture of creativity. Questions to be addressed in this session include: How to identify the most promising new research areas? How can we encourage creative minds to examine newly-emerging fields? How can foundations stimulate the next generation of researchers to embark on these newly developing, often inter-disciplinary areas rather than sheltering in the safe haven of their core discipline? What institutional requirements must universities meet to play a leading role in fostering creativity?

The European Forum on Philanthropy and Research Funding is a new initiative led by the European Foundation Centre (EFC) with support from the European Commission and individual funders. It aims to help underpin philanthropic funding for research through the exchange of experiences and best practices, the development of cooperation on research funding, and the promotion of a favourable environment for foundation and private philanthropy undertakings.
