Several thematic courses will be held over the next few months as part of the "Advanced Course on the Use of Membrane Technology in Environmental Applications" under the LEONARDO DA VINCI programme. Participation is invited from researchers in science and industry working in the relevant areas.

One course will deal with "Membrane Processes in the Pharmaceutical Industry and Fine Chemistry". It will take place in Toulouse, France, on 18-19 January 1999.

The second course is on "Membrane Applications in the Food and Dairy Industry", to be held in Oviedo, Spain, on 23-24 March 1999.

The courses have been organised within the framework of the European Commission's (DG XXII) LEONARDO DA VINCI programme, which is directed towards vocational training. The main objective of the course is to enhance researchers' levels of knowledge about the potential applications of membrane technology for solving environmental problems.

The course is spread out over three years and composed of 15 modules on different topics. Each module focuses on a specific theme and lasts for two days. Different countries are chosen to host each module of the course bearing in mind the pertinence of that topic at both a regional and European level.

Over the whole course, the potential applications of membrane technology will be considered for a number of industrial sectors ranging from the automotive industry to water and waste treatment.
