Its research and development program is embedded in the program structure of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.

The University of Karlsruhe (Technical University) and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe founded the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It combines the strengths of both partners, first in micro- and nanotechnologies, scientific computing with the focus on grid computing, and materials research for the energy sector. KIT is a unique and cutting edge model in Germany.

Education and training are statutory elements of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. Over 850 training courses, seminars and laboratory sessions with more than 12,500 participants each year take place in its Centre for Advanced Technological and Environmental Training (FTU).
