MICROCON is holding its 3rd annual Workshop and training day

MOCROCON is a five-year Integrated Research project funded by the European Commission in the context of the 6th Framework Programme, social science research. The project takes an innovative micro level, multidisciplinary approach to the study of the conflict cycle through in-depth understanding of individual and group interactions leading to and resulting from violent mass conflicts.
MICROCON’s main aim is to uncover much-needed fundamentals for better informed domestic, regional and international conflict policy, which places individuals and groups at the centre of their interventions. It explores cases ranging from Burundi to Uganda, Colombia, India and others and involving aspects such as access to natural resources, displacement, health, gender dimensions.
The consortium will be holding its Third Annual Workshop at DIW Berlin on 2 and 3 July, 2009. The first day will be an internal workshop devoted to discussion of research results to date, and how to integrate findings from the different parts of the programme.
The second day will be a policy training day.
The second day of this year's MICROCON Annual Workshop will consist of a number of policy sessions chaired by senior MICROCON researchers. The objective of these sessions is to closely engage researchers and practitioners working in or on development policy in conflict and post-conflict situations. There will be an opening address by the MICROCON Director, Patricia Justino, followed by two sets of parallel sessions on the following topics:
Individual and group motivations for mobilisation into violence, including gender identities – Prof. Frances Stewart, University of Oxford
Migration, displacement and health – Prof. Debarati Guha-Sapir, Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of disasters
Poverty and coping - effects of violent conflict at the individual and household levels and strategies for adaptation to violence – Dr. Philip Verwimp, University of Antwerp
