The European Coal and Steel Community is holding a conference on "ECSC Steel Research and Development on Environmental Issues", in Bilbao, Spain, on 10 to 11 February 1999.

The workshop is intended to give an overview of the Community-funded research in this field. It offers participants the opportunity to share the results of a number of iron and steel-related research projects completed within the frame of various community programmes such as ECSC, BRITE-EURAM, THERMIE, LIFE and INCO-COPERNICUS.

A seminar will deal with air protection, wastewater treatment and recycling of residues and by-products. There will also be a workshop to provide a forum for presentations and discussions of the best available technology (BAT) Reference Document (BREF) likely to be approved by January 1999, within the framework of the "Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control" policy (IPPC).

Specific problems and needs related to Central and Eastern European countries will also be addressed.
