Humanitarian aid, environmental protection and anti-fraud actions of the European Commission are among topics the Joint Research Centre (JRC) will highlight at the conference in Essen on 25 and 26 February 1999, which will officially launch the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) on research, technological development and demonstration (RTD).

The JRC will contribute ten satellite stands, focusing on different topics:

- Identification of genetically modified organisms;
- Analysis on biomaterials;
- Techno-economic analysis supporting the European Union policy making;
- Reference materials;
- Analysis of safety of the nuclear fuel cycle;
- Global environmental monitoring;
- European-wide information and communication systems;
- Results of the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment;
- Renewable energies;
- Boron neutron capture therapy for the treatment of brain tumours.

This will be a new opportunity for the JRC with its eight institutes to focus on its role as the official research and pre-normative centre of the EU with a key role in supporting the EU in meeting new challenges.
