To help potential proposers to the energy sector of the European Commission's Fifth Framework Programme for research and development, the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is hosting three workshops on energy research, development and demonstration. These technology -specific workshops will be held in London on 26, 30 and 31 March 1999.

The workshop agendas are planned to cover the following topics:

- 26 March - renewable energy technologies;
- 30 March - large-scale power generation;
- 31 March - rational use of energy and other topics.

The outline programme for these events is as follows:

- First Call under FP5:
- - The new "Activities", "Themes" and "Key Actions" explained together with the specific work programme and where project ideas fit-in;
- Application Procedures:
- - Advice and guidance on maximising your chances of success;
- UK Central Contact and Advice Point: FP5:
- - Energy. An introduction to, and news of, the single central contact and advice point for applicants to FP5 - Energy.
- Panel Discussion:
- - Question/answer session by all speakers plus invited industry experts;
- Workshops:
- - Detailed help and advice moderated by officials and industry experts.

The content of the three workshops is basically common, the only difference being that each will focus on different parts of the work programme. It is hoped that Commission representatives will be available to explain what the call means in each of the three broad areas.

In addition the UK national programme coordinator, BRECSU, ETSU, the UK Central Contact and Advice Point for FP5 - Energy, and industry experts are expected to attend and will be available throughout the day to talk informally and advise on points of special interest to different organisations.
