FLARE 2 : funding call for post graduates now open from 15th July 2010 until 15th October 2010.
ERA-AGE 2 comprises thirteen partners who are each public authorities responsible for the funding and coordination of national research programmes, and has recently recruited three associate partners. In addition, the project has four associate partner organisations to enable and maximise the sharing of experiences and build a critical mass of ageing research. The network is coordinated by the UK representative The New Dynamics of Ageing Programme and it is supported by a steering group comprising of research managers, scientists, and representatives from the European Commission.
All partners are also committed to progressively expanding the partnership, developing the resources on research infrastructure and delivering the second round of the pioneering FLARE programme,.
FLARE was the first European programme on ageing research funded by the Member States themselves. Launched in February 2007 the joint programme aimed to provide up to sixteen 3 year post-doctoral fellowships for recently qualified scientists. It was so successful that eighteen fellowships were in fact funded and FLARE 2 aims to enjoy a similar level of success and high caliber applications.
The programme has two innovative features: part of the fellowship must be spent in another country and it must also involve a cross-disciplinary collaboration. These novel features reflect the strong scientific consensus on the need to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to ageing research and also the need to forge strong European networks in this area, particularly with regard to supporting our early career researchers. Hence a key priority for both scientists and end users is the support of the next generation of researchers on ageing, hence the title, ‘Future Leaders of Ageing Research in Europe' (FLARE).

The aims of the FLARE 2 call are:
• To provide outstanding researchers with the opportunity to qualify for a leading position in ageing research;
• to support ageing research and develop a well trained cohort of European interdisciplinary researchers in this field, connecting them to the prominent research institutes and scientific teams in Europe as well as to other post-doctoral researchers through communication, meetings and schools;
• to enhance communication and multilateral co-operation in ageing research and thereby create a network of leading European institutes and experts to form a basis for future national and EU-funded research on ageing.
The main selection criteria to be used by the FLARE 2 call are as follows:
• Scientific quality and originality of the project and of the research plan.
• Scientific excellence of the applicant (competence and expertise in his/her field, potential to become leaders in their field of research previous scientific track record, publications in scientific journals, other).
• National and international standing of the home and receiving institute (research profile of group and / or leading scientists) and complementarity.
• Integration of the project/fellow in the two institutes.
• Inter- or multidisciplinarity of the proposed project.
• Strengths and weaknesses of the project
• Ethical issues (if applicable)
The FLARE 2 post-doctoral programme will run from 2011 to 2014.
