WHO brings Ministers together for a healthy environment
Pollution, accidents, changes in the ecosystem, urban development, occupational hazards are among the topics to be discussed at "London '99", which the World Health Organisation (WHO) is organising for its European and Russian initiative.
This initiative aims to reduce the risks, posed by the environment, and the event will be held in London between 16 and 18 June 1999.
The WHO's third ministerial conference on environment and health, it will aim to identify priorities for the twenty-first century, develop strategies to make improvements and implement those strategies.
WHO says it expects discussions at the conference will lead to agreements on firm commitments and concrete actions, which may even be legally binding. The focus will be on encouraging practical action.
Representatives from the European Commission will attend the event, alongside Ministers of health and environment from 51 countries and representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
