Invitation to Workshop: Hydrogen - Is there a Future?

Hydrogen is currently being considered as an energy carrier for supply chains based on renewable energy.

This one-day workshop will take place on the 10th of March 2011 in Trondheim, Norway.

The workshop deals with societal and technological challenges if hydrogen technology is going to meet the needs posed by our current energy situation.

Hydrogen is currently being considered as an energy carrier for supply chains based on renewable energy. However, hydrogen as a fuel and storage medium poses significant technological challenges associated with the devices that eventually will have to produce the hydrogen from renewable energy, store it, and convert it back to high-quality energy. Unavoidable efficiency losses and practical problems associated with the technology itself or with its socio-political and economic implications have led many to reject the very idea of a hydrogen-based energy system. Other and related ideas, such as methanol-based economies, may be expected to suffer similar problems.

Still, in spite of significant progress in alternative technologies such as batteries, it is not yet clear how modern societies will be able to cope with dwindling fossil and nuclear resources and mounting evidence of the adverse effects of CO2-releases without the hydrogen idea. Most developed countries therefore still actively pursue research on hydrogen through large-scale projects, for example within FP7 of the European Union. The Initial Training Network-project SUSHGEN, dealing with high-temperature PEM water electrolysis and funded by the European Union, is an example of an activity that pursues the dual purposes educating researchers for the expected needs of the hydrogen transition as well as developing improved hydrogen technology.

The format of the workshop is tutorial, but will allow you to interact and discuss with some leading scientists in their fields.
