The Fifth EC-GIS Workshop, "GIS of Tomorrow" will be held in Stresa, Lago Maggiore, Northern Italy, between 28 and 30 June 1999.

The workshop is one in a series, which focuses on GIS-related projects funded by the European Commission (EC). The series aims to present GI (geo-information) and GIS (geo-information systems) projects to establish and maintain contacts and to enable consultation and cross-fertilization of ideas.

In addition, more general issues relating to the evolution of GIS technologies and developments will be discussed.

The workshop will focus on work conducted within the framework of ESPRIT and INFO2000, other EC-funded projects, GI2000, and the EC's Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological development and Demonstration (RTD). The event will also include presentations from other prominent GI/GIS initiatives

The following topics will receive particular attention at the event:

- GIS fusion with New Technologies;
- Intelligent Environmental Monitoring Systems;
- GI in the Public Sector;
- The economy of GI;
- Essential Infrastructures for GI/GIS.

The Space Applications Institute of the Joint Research Centre and the EC, Directorate-General XIII, are organizing the event.
