ENGAGE WORKSHOP
The ENGAGE project is organising an open workshop on the 29th August 2011, targeting “Open Governmental Data for Science and Society”, in conjunction with the tenth IFIP eGovernment Conference, which takes place in Delft, The Netherlands, between the 28th August and 2nd September 2011. The local host of the IFIP eGovernment Conference is the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM), of the Delft University of Technology. The TPM Faculty wishes to make a significant contribution to sustainable solutions for social problems in which technology plays an important role, through internationally oriented education and research.

The ENGAGE Workshop takes place from 9.00 to 12.30 on the 29th of August (Track B). The Workshop is divided into two sessions: the first consists of four presentations, each for 90 minutes, and the second session is for idea-exchanges amongst participants. The four presentations and the organisations delivering them at this Workshop are:

- Timo Wandhoefer & Mark Thamm, GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences: “Public Politician Profiles on Facebook and the gap of Authenticity: WeGov interview results with the German Bundestag”.

- Sicco Verwer, Susan van den Braak & Sunil Choenni, Research and Documentation Centre (WODC), Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice: “Sharing data using multiple imputation”.

- Nils Barnickel, Matthias Flügge, Jens Klessmann, Fraunhofer FOKUS: "Provision of public sector information at the local level. Practical experiences from the State of Berlin”.

- Yannis Charalabidis, University of Aegean & Marijn Janssen, Delft University of Technology: “Open Data Sources, Resources, Annotation Mechanisms and On-line Services Outlook from the ENGAGE project¨.

The objective of this “Open Governmental Data for Science and Society”, workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the field, to discuss the scientific base of ICT-enabled governance for open data, thus harnessing open data sources and methodologies for annotating, visualising and making open data available to scientists and citizens from a variety of perspectives and to engage researchers and practitioners in discussions on their needs. In addition it is hoped that conference and workshop participants can be encouraged to join the ENGAGE community, and to participate in ENGAGE service trials and ENGAGE service evaluations as the project advances.

The IFIP eGovernment Conference will take place in the Aula Conference Centre, Mekelweg 5, Delft, The Netherlands. English is the official Language for the conference.
The workshop chairmen are:
- Yannis Charalabidis, University of Aegean, Greece, (yannisx@aegean.gr ),
- Sunil Choenni, Ministry of Justice, The Netherlands, (r.choenni@minjus.nl),
- Marijn Janssen, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, (m.f.w.h.a.janssen@tudelft.nl).

ENGAGE PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The ENGAGE project’s full name is: “An Infrastructure for Open, Linked Governmental Data Provision Towards Research Communities and Citizens”. The project objective is to optimize the use and development of the best research infrastructure in Europe, thereby supporting the objectives of the Capacities programme within the 7th Framework Programme (7FP) for Research and Technological Development (RTD). The project emerges from a policy context of improved access to public sector data.

The main goal of the ENGAGE project is to release a services infrastructure allowing researchers, citizens and other stakeholders to have better access to public open data. ENGAGE will deploy and use an advanced service infrastructure, incorporating distributed and diverse public sector open information resources as well as data curation, semantic annotation and visualisation tools, capable of supporting scientific collaboration and governance-related research from multi-disciplinary scientific communities, whilst empowering the deployment of open governmental data towards citizens. Starting in June 2011 the ENGAGE project will run for three years and will develop ten services allowing users to better access open public data.

PARTNERS EXPERTISE
The ENGAGE project brings together the project partners from: Greece, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, and The United Kingdom. And each partner having a specialisation in e-Infrastructure, governance, technology development, cloud computing, and scientific data diffusion. The partners involved are:
