A combined VALUE/SPRINT Information Conference and Exhibition, organized by the Commission of the European Communities (Directorate-General for Information Technologies and Industries, and Telecommunications, DG XIII) in collaboration with the State Ministry for Economic and Labour Affairs of the State "Freistaat" of Saxony, took place in Dresden on 1-2 December 1992.

Preparation for this event, which addressed topics centred on the former East Germany, included round-table discussions with German members of the VALUE and SPRINT Committees, the BMFT, the BMWI and other German experts.

The participants included staff from research institutions, universities and industry. Close to 50% of those present represented industries located in the new Laender (the former East German States). In particular, small and medium sized industries (SMEs) from these areas were well represented. Though conference space limited the number of guests to a maximum of 200, over 800 people confirmed their wish to attend.

An online demonstraton of CORDIS attracted a majority of delegates. Great enthusiasm was expressed for the CORDIS RTD-Partners database, which aids organizations to locate suitable partners in other Member States with a view to possible cooperation on future projects.

A number of presentations dealt with the exploitation of Community research results, and included explanation of the increasingly important role played by the VALUE programme, demonstrating the range of methods this programme can employ in the support of RTD exploitation or dissemination.

Equal interest was shown in the ongoing SPRINT actions to promote the professional development and European orientation of innovation intermediaries, in demand-led technology transfer, and in the development of a pan-European infrastructure to support this goal.
