A third meeting related to the fight against doping in sport will be organised by the European Commission and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Toulouse, France, between 7 and 9 May 1999. This will consider the complaints of athletes and their trainers, and aim to increase the confidence of sportsmen and women in the procedures used to fight doping.

In 1998 a project aimed at looking at the problems of doping was launched, with the support of the European Commission's Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) programme under the Fourth Framework Programme.

The Commission believes that these problems deserve to be addressed at a transnational level in order to set up harmonised procedures and thus to fight more effectively against doping. It is also a question which requires some scientific and technical research, in particular with a view to developing reference materials and harmonising measurement methods.

The first meeting organised under this project was devoted to collecting information on different national legislation, regulations and practices related to the fight against doping.

At the second meeting, particular attention was given to the scientific aspect of the fight against doping, and included discussions between directors of accredited laboratories, doctors, and representatives of companies making research instruments.

A fourth meeting will take place in Brussels in the coming weeks. The IOC will then submit a study report on research priorities for an optimal fight against doping.
