PRESS BRIEFING: Adoption of Written Declaration on Science Capacity-Building in Africa: promoting European African radio astronomy partnerships

On the occasion of the European Parliament’s adoption of Written Declaration 45/2011 on Science Capacity-Building in Africa: promoting European African radio astronomy partnerships a press briefing will be organised in the European Parliament.

The press briefing will be hosted by the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who sponsored the Written Declaration. Minister for Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa, Ms Naledi Pandor, will be in attendance.

The Written Declaration highlights the essential role of science and technology in achieving development goals and promoting sustainable economic growth, with an emphasis on the role of radio astronomy research infrastructures. The declaration also highlights the potential of EU collaboration with African scientists and researchers to generate a new range of market opportunities for both continents.Biographies of Minister Pandor and Written Declaration Sponsors

Filip Kaczmarek is a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) (EPP). He is a member of the Committee on Development, Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament and Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. In 2011 Mr Kaczmarek issued an Own initiative report on the impact of EU development policy.

Miguel Angel Martínez Martínez is a Vice-president of the European Parliament. Currently he is serving his third term as an MEP. He is a member of the Committee on Development, the Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament and Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. He is a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D).

Teresa Riera Madurell (not attending the press briefing) is a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D). She is the S&D coordinator in Industry, Research and Energy Committee. Ms Riera Madurell is the Parliament’s Horizon 2020 rapporteur, being responsible for the guidelines of the next Framework Programme.

Fiona Hall is a member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee. She is a member of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). She is leader of the UK Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament and is a member of the Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament and Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly.

Judith Sargentini is a Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with South Africa and a member of Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. She is a member of Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance (GREENS).
