The fourth Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GDSI) conference will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 13 to 15 March 2000.

Delegates will be invited to consider the results of a major study into the business case for spatial data infrastructure (SDI) development. It is envisaged that this study will be used for a major campaign to secure government and funding support for national, regional and global SDI development.

The economic, social, environmental and disaster management benefits that may be achieved through national, regional and global SDIs will be discussed, as well as how national governments and international agencies can support SDI development.

The GSDI aims to enable global access to geographic information, considered necessary to respond to the challenge of global sustainable development. It is of potential benefit to government and NGOs, education and research institutes, the commercial sector and the wider community.

An interim group, the GSDI Steering Committee with representatives from all continents, is establishing a permanent global umbrella organisation for the future of the GSDI.
