The results of the European Commission's PLATFORM project will be launched at the conference 'Improving Freight intermodality towards a sustainable transport system', in Rome, Italy, on 20 September 1999. The PLATFORM project developed computer-controlled freight platforms for a timetabled rail transport system under the Fourth Framework Programme.

During its 18 months, the PLATFORM project has implemented a simulation environment to assess the impact of new technologies and management policies on terminal performances, producing a set of methodologies and technical tools for its use. The project has also developed a computerised control and management system that can simulate transport flows and terminal services in order to identify the most efficient use of intermodal terminals for rail-road transport.

The conference should be of interest to relevant parties in intermodal transport: terminal managers, shippers, forwarders, technicians and scientists involved in the PLATFORM project. Participants will also be shown how to benefit from the Fifth Framework Programme in related tasks.

Project materials including a draft final report will be available during the conference, and experts will be on hand to demonstrate the PLATFORM simulation environment.
