The fourth global spatial data infrastructure (GSDI) conference will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 13 to 15 March 2000.

The GSDI encompasses the broad policy, organisational, technical and financial arrangements necessary to support global access to geographic information, seen by many as central to sustainable global development. The GSDI offers the potential of better decision-making thereby improving economic growth, social development and environmental management.

An interim group, the GSDI steering committee with representatives from each continent, has been asked to establish a permanent global umbrella organisation to nurture the GSDI.

The conference will present the results of a major study into the business case for special data infrastructure (SDI) development, which will be used in a campaign to secure government and funding support.
