Metadata for networked resources workshop
Metadata is structured information that enables organisations to describe, manage and organise the electronic resources (documents, images or databases) they publish on the Internet. The tutorial aims to provide organisations and individuals with background information, practical examples and information on future developments relevant to the use of metadata for publishing networked information.
The Desire project aims to enhance existing European information networks for research users in the areas of caching, resource discovery and directory services.
The tutorial will be divided into five sessions. The first will provide a general overview of metadata, outlining its relevance, different types, challenges in defining metadata standards and frameworks and the tension between interoperability and extensibility.
The second part will focus on the Dublin Core, a simple resource description element set for electronic resources that is intended to be applicable in different languages and across disciplines. It was developed through cooperation between 16 countries on four continents.
The third part will summarise the resource description framework (RDF), an infrastructure to support metadata on the Web. RDF provides a general framework for describing the relations between networked resources and defines XML transfer syntax for sharing those descriptions among applications.
The fourth section will expand the notion of metadata to include the notion of qualification, and the fifth and final part will describe recent developments in tools for creating and using metadata.
The workshop takes place immediately before the ALT-C 99 Conference, also taking place in Bristol, dedicated to the Learning Technology Life-Cycle.
