British academic researchers are enthusiastically embracing the concept of EC collaborative research but UK companies should take a fuller role, Robert Jackson, Parliamentary Secretary, Office of Public Service and Science said recently while speaking at the opening of a symposium of EC Research and Development held the Institution of Civil Engineers in London.

The symposium brought together members of the academic and industrial research communities to give them an opportunity to discuss EC research issues and priorities for the development of the Fourth Framework Programme. Opening the symposium, Mr. Jackson referred to a recent study, funded by the European Commission and the Office of Science and Technology on the impact of EC R&D programmes in the UK. He also congratulated the research community on their active involvement in EC collaborative research and urged more UK companies to take part.
