A series of courses to help participants prepare successful proposals for the User-friendly Information Society (IST) programme within the EU's Fifth Framework Programme are being organised by IETT - Institute of European Trade and Technology. The two-day proposal writing courses in October and November are aimed in particular at organisations intending to apply under the forthcoming IST call, now due to be published on 1 October 1999.

The dates and locations are as follows:

4-5 October 1999, London;
18-19 October 1999, Amsterdam;
8-9 November, Paris.

Day 1 will provide a detailed introduction to the IST programme and the art of good proposal writing. Day 2 will provide a detailed step-by-step explanation and practical examples of how to write successful proposals. The workshops will be led by programme experts with direct experience of writing, evaluating and managing IST/Esprit projects. The following are some of the topic areas to be covered by the course:

- IST programme overview and administration;
- Is your project idea likely to gain EU support? Right idea, wrong proposal;
- How are EU proposals evaluated? Who really takes the decisions?
- Proposal writing: objectives, contribution to programme/key action, innovation;
- Hitting the target - why measurable objectives are important;
- Proposal writing: the workplan, European added value; social/economic objectives;
- Proposal writing: project management, consortium and participants;
- Proposal presentation: tips and examples;
- How to improve chances of success: advice and check lists.

The structure of the courses is flexible and proposers may attend one or both days. Participants are encouraged to bring short summaries of their proposals or project ideas for consultation with experts. The two-day courses will suit both newcomers and more experienced proposers. They are aimed at senior managers in industrial, academic and research organisations, including SMEs, who wish to improve their skills and their understanding of the IST programme. The workshops will take the form of lectures, round-table discussions, short group exercises, feedback sessions and one-to-one consultations. An informal dinner will be held in the evening of Day 1, giving the participants a further chance to network and share experiences.
