The Fifth Eurowood symposium on 'Timber construction: launching innovation for the 21st century' will take place on 30 and 31 March 2000 in Bordeaux, France.

The event is organised by the EUROWOOD network, an association of European institutes and research centres in the field of wood, created some ten years ago with the support of the European Commission.

Discussion groups will consider:

- Socio-economic issues:
- - Societal dynamics - questioning the trends in society that could affect ways of building, including: ageing of people, working at home, more leisure time, single parent families, people moving home more frequently, and so on;
- - Construction economics: new trends in project management for the building industry, global cost of buildings, comparison of different building technologies associated with their costs, low cost construction, and factory production.

- Environment, energy, comfort:
- - Recycling of materials and components, life cycle analysis of building components, environmental impact of materials, eco-certification/accreditation and sustainable development;
- - Energy balance of buildings, new trends in acoustics, advantages of timber for thermal insulation, summer insulation, fire designs, indoor air quality, and 'healthy buildings'.

- Innovative products and processes:
- - New wood-based materials, fire-proofed wood, torrefied wood, wood polymers and composites, and non-destructive technologies;
- Components and systems: mixed structures, three-dimensional systems, multimedia in the building industry, connections.

- Architectural trends:
- - New trends for offices, housing, industrial buildings, recycling of buildings, designing from inside and design for factory production;
- - Civil engineering works: bridges, highway equipment and poles.

During the final plenary session an architect will present a vision of 'wood and construction in the third millennium' based on the earlier discussions.
